An air to water Heat Pump system is an Air Source Heat Pump that distributes heat via your wet central heating system. In the picture is a Mitsubishi Ecodan. Heat Pumps work much more efficiently at a lower temperature than a standard boiler system would. So they are more suitable for underfloor heating systems or larger radiators, which give out heat at lower temperatures over longer periods of time. Our favourite Heat Pump of choice would have to be the ‘OPEN LOOP’ Ground Source Heat Pump!! Although not as popular since the ease of  Air Source Heat Pumps alike it is still most consistent with efficiency (COP) not changing by the change in climate as other sources do vary slightly.

The open loop heat pump system maybe the most expensive way but is the most efficient choice. The source water extracted from the water table is most constant at around 12-13 deg whatever season we are in, making the COP (co efficiency performance) by far the best. Although depending on specification of the heat pump an extraction license maybe required if the the heat pump requires over 20’000 litres a day as this is all we are allowed to extract.

…These work in the same way as the closed loop system but the source of low grade heat comes form the water table via a borehole/well/spring and a borehole pump. This low grade heat from the water is extracted via the heat exchanger in the heat pump it then passes through a compressor that raises it to a higher temperature, which can then heat water for the heating and hot water circuits of the house. The cooled waste water passes back into the ground via a seccond borehole (re-charge hole) where it absorbs further energy from the ground in a continuous process as long as heating is required …and so the cycle continues while we demand heat.

If there is enough yield of water, there is the option to use the borehole/well to also supply the property’s grey water. If it is intended for drinking (potable) then a good filtration tank system will require installing. These are all options to look at before choosing what application is right for you….so if your thinking Heat Pumps….Think HEATWISE SOUTHWEST RENEWABLES!!!
